Apply to be a Master Gardener

Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who assist Dona Ana County residents with yard and garden questions or problems. Applications for the program does not mean automatic acceptance into the program. All questions must be filled out completely and applications will be reviewed by senior Master Gardeners and the County Agent in charge of the program. Applications are accepted from February through June . Classes will tentatively begin in August, and run through January.

To be certified as a Dona Ana County Master Gardener, you must successfully complete the 14 to 15 week Master Gardener Classes offered each year and complete a 50-hour internship that includes 25 hours of answering questions on the Hotline and 25 hours of other community-based volunteer activities. MG’s must volunteer at least 30 hours each year to retain their certification.

The classes meet weekly, usually four to six hours a day. and are tentatively scheduled for August to January. The cost of $200 (subject to change), covers the textbook and other class materials. Course instructors include New Mexico State University Extension Specialists, certified Master Gardeners and other regional horticultural experts.
